Substrates

At Kava, we understand the importance of sustainability and offering high-quality products to our customers. We acknowledge that individuals have different requirements and what some consider important, isn't to others. That's why we have carefully curated four different types of substrates, each with its own unique sustainability factors and price points. In this guide, we will help you choose the right substrate for your needs.

ECOBoards are a completely healthy bio based circular sheet material, made from residual fibres from agriculture and horticulture.

The advantage is that waste streams from various harvests can be used, they are various residual streams that are usually burned or composted as a waste problem.

After the harvest, the residual waste is collected for a small fee and sent for processing and shaping. After everything is correct, it only ends up in the Silo after which the production process can start.

The result is an Ecoboards that scores much better on sustainability than other panels currently on the market that require forests to be cut.

Chipboard is strong, low in price, good quality and is made entirely of recycled material.

Fewer trees will be chopped down when people choose chipboard over solid wood and other paperboard. Made from recycled paper and cardboard, the energy needed to produce the finished product is far less than other packaging materials, meaning a healthier environment for everybody and less of a need for more deforestation.

All of our chipboard is 100% recyclable, so when your Kava product has a chipboard substrate, know that it can be recycled without going to landfill and it can continue to be used again and again.

FSC Certified Birch Ply Birch trees are a fast-growing species native to north-eastern Europe, the abundance and speed of growth of Birch trees means that it causes minimal devastation or destruction of biodiversity when they are cut down, making Birch plywood a sustainable choice that has little impact on the environment.

We never buy our birch ply from far away, it is only ever European. We also try and source it from The Wood Store, a local social enterprise who run a wood recycling project.

MDF The sustainable MDF we choose to use consists of 40% wood chip and 60% by-product. Each range boasts some of the most environmentally efficient building materials on the market, with a product-specific Type 3 Environmental Product Declaration to support this.

With manufacturing sites in Clonmel (MEDITE) and Waterford (SMARTPLY), Ireland, it offers a dependable, local supply and reduces the carbon footprint for timber merchants and suppliers.
